-> ABOUT CRUNCHED SOURCE CODE ON THIS DISK <-
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
@1
I faced a dilemma, disk space wise. Should I give you loads of source and
less articles? or more articles and less source?
If I put loads of source on Amoszine it would be just another source code
disk with a couple of articles. I didn't want this, as I am sure you would
agree! If you don't agree then you can get F1 Amos Source disks, see
F1_Products.
So, what I wanted was the best of both worlds, loads of articles and loads
of source. The obvious answer was to crunch everything possible on the disk.
I did this for early versions of issue 0 using Power Packer Patcher. It
worked fine on my A1200 but I soon got complaints that it wouldn't work
on A500's. This is because PPP patches Loadseg which intercepts loaded files
on WB 2.x machines but NOT on the A500. So I had to unpack everything delete
some source code and the music to fit it all on.
This is all well and good but it leaves out one factor that I care about, and
that's VALUE FOR MONEY. You won't get a lot of articles and source on an
uncrunched disk! what with all the system files etc. So as you have probably
worked out by now I decided to crunch some of the source code.
I realise this will cause some people hassle, but we have only crunched SOME
of the source (mainly the large files). The crunched source is easily
recognisable because it will have the extender .PP like this:

BLACK_DAWN.AMOS.PP

If you load this into Amos you will get an error or gobbledegook!
What I have done is to supply an excellent util called FILEMASTER on this
disk. You can run it from inside Amos and decrunch the source into your
ram disk. It`s VERY easy to do, but first read the article RUNNING EXTERNAL
PRGS IN AMOS, which will tell you everything you need to know.
I have chossen to crunch the source with PP as it's very common and most
people feel comfortable with it and it is widely supported.
Note* You will need the powerpacker.library in libs on your Amos disk to do
any crunching or de-crunching inside Filemaster.
OK it's hassle for you but when you look at the disk space gain and realize
how many extra articles and programs you get in their place I think you
will agree that this is the best compromise at the moment. Let me know if
you think different.
I will be investigating the PPLOAD and PPSAVE commands in Amos Pro to see
what can be done there, watch this space.
Right, here is the info:

Well, I think it is worth the hassle for 109K worth of articles.
